Princess Margaret was one of the most colourful and popular of the British royals. She was witty, brash and, as the “royal spare” she was allowed to run wild in ways her elder sister could only dream about.

If there’s one thing that most people remember about Princess Margaret, it’s that while she had a reputation for being difficult, she was also apparently very entertaining — and, at times, downright rude.

As the Queen’s younger sibling, Margaret was said to be very spoilt by her parents and everyone around her, who were expected to be at her beck and call. But, despite this, she wasn’t allowed to do everything she wanted, including marrying the man she loved, Peter Townsend.

Margaret was known for her love of gin, whiskey and chain smoking; she also enjoyed a social life to rival most famous Hollywood movie stars. It seems everybody that knew the princess — even those that only knew her fleetingly — have an entertaining story to tell about her.

Here are some of Margaret’s most well-known gaffes.
